Program Overview

Career Storybook: Life Planning, is a personalized small group program designed for individuals to discover themselves and document their personal profiles: interests, strengths, liabilities, and goals. Participants are guided through a series of journaling prompts to create a detailed life plan and goals which is used to discover and plan next steps in their personal, college, and career plans. Optional projects help students discover their personal passions and how their individual work styles and learning preferences.

Program Duration and Type

Class, workshop, forum?

24 – 30-hour group workshop.

This is a group class with largely solo journaling and writing work and regular group meetings to share work and get group feedback. Student will interface with their personal network as well.

The class that can be configured as a stand-alone workshop or portion of an advisory curriculum. Individual and Multiple small groups are supported.

Optional extensions are available to be incorporated into the program or used by individuals wishing to dig deeper.

Target Audience

Who will benefit from this program?

Individuals who want to align their strengths and interests to their career choices. The program can be used by young adults in schools or coaching programs, with career coaches for people in career transitions, or retirees seeking to discover new adventures.

Ideal Mentor

Who are the mentors that will best use this program? What prior knowledge. Skills, or perspectives should they have to be effective?

The primary skills needed to conduct this course are interpersonal, group management, competence managing the technical tools, and affinity to support the target individual participants (works well with teens, etc.). Detailed domain knowledge is not necessary.

Career counselors who wish to provide a more meaningful guidance to their participants and career coaches who want to offer a group-based career program. The program can also be mentored by responsible parents, young adults, or as part of a community-based program.

Learning Objectives

What are the specific learning objectives of the program and how are they measured?

Participants develop and deep knowledge of themselves, their influences, their strengths, and their goals across eight domains of self-knowledge. As a result, students develop self-confidence and direction for their lives while developing understanding and empathy for the differences, strengths and directions of others.

Participant Benefits

What will participants get form this program? How will they be engaged? How will they be transformed?

Participants will examine many aspects of themselves and relate what they learn to their life goals in a way that help them make more aligned career choices. Working in groups and with the support of the program mentor and their personal support team, they will gain more clarity and confidence as they make career and life choices.

Interactive Activities

What are the interactive activities in the program?

Participants discuss their journals with their groups and personal support network to get feedback and validation of their results.  Final papers are peer reviewed.

Products and Results

What is the tangible recognition of achievement, if any? Work products? Portfolio materials? Badges and/or certifications?
Participants produce a ‘life plan’ which identifies their strengths and interests and a specific action plan for moving their lives forward.

Certification Process & Cost

What is the certification process and cost for a mentor to be able to deliver this program?

Certification requires familiarity with the program content and processes. Certification is $99 and includes ongoing support while the program is being offered.
