Academic and Professional Background

Matt earned his Bachelor of Arts in World History from Ohio University before he moved to Washington, D.C. for his graduate education at The George Washington University, where he studied international conflict prevention and ethical war journalism. Matt spent most of his professional life working in U.S. foreign affairs, global and domestic crisis response, news journalism, and non-profit management.

Personal Profile

Matthew R. Bishop grew up reading adventure stories and exploring the woods outside his home. He has been writing fantasy since 2004. He published his first fantasy novel in 2012 (A Land of Our Own), followed by a sequel (In the Shadows of Laeolin) in 2014. By 2018 he was Senior Editor of Fantasy and Science Fiction at a genre fiction publishing house, but the federal government recalled him late in 2018 and sent him on emergency assignments to Georgia and Florida.

Outside of his writing and political commentary, Matt enjoys travel, hiking, climbing, swimming, and outdoor adventure sports. He taught rock climbing for three years at Ohio University’s Ping Center and in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania.

Cultural Perspectives

Matthew is a young Millennial man from the “Rust Belt” of the American Midwest. He grew up outside of Columbus, Ohio.

Ohio is considered a politically centrist state and one of the nation’s most critical electoral battlegrounds, with the cities being liberal and the countryside remaining conservative. No U.S. President has taken office after losing Ohio’s vote since 1960.

Matthew considers himself to be a progressive in Ohio, which means he is a radical Marxist in Alabama and a far-right Nazi in California.
